Calvin and Hobbes by Bill Watterson — August 19, 1988 | Daily Comic Fun

Calvin and Hobbes never fails to capture the wild imagination of childhood, and this classic Sunday strip from August 19, 1988 is a perfect example of why millions of fans still love it today.

In this hilarious camping adventure, Calvin and Hobbes are settled in for a night under the stars when Calvin decides to read a scary story called “The Hideous Monster Who Waits in Your Back Yard to Dismember You.” Only Calvin would pick that for a bedtime story!

As Calvin reads the terrifying tale of the Bog Monster creeping through the moonlight, every little sound in the dark becomes a nightmare. A snap of a twig sends them both into full panic mode — flashlights out, lying still, completely convinced the Bog Monster is real and coming for them.

The tension builds perfectly across each panel until the tent flap opens… and it turns out to be Calvin’s dad just checking on them. His classic reaction — “Where’s that kid?” — is the perfect punchline to a perfectly built comic.

Why We Love This Strip:
This comic is pure genius because it captures something every kid has felt — that mix of wanting to be scared and then immediately regretting it. Watterson’s artwork in the dark nighttime panels is absolutely stunning, using shadows and color to build real suspense in just a few comic panels.
