Every school day ended the same way—Calvin hopping off the school bus with a backpack full of homework and a head full of wild ideas. But today felt different. As he walked toward the front door, a familiar thought crossed his mind.
“Uh-oh… I’ll bet Hobbes is hiding inside, waiting to pounce on me the second I open the door.”
Calvin knew Hobbes well. The mischievous tiger had a talent for disappearing into the most unexpected places before launching one of his famous surprise attacks. Opening the front door would be exactly what Hobbes expected.
A grin slowly spread across Calvin’s face.
“I’ve got a better idea,” he whispered to himself. “I’ll sneak around the back and surprise him instead!”
Certain he had outsmarted his striped friend, Calvin quietly crept around the house, carefully avoiding making any noise. His heart raced with excitement as he slipped through the back entrance, already imagining Hobbes’ shocked expression.
But when Calvin stepped inside, everything was… quiet.
There was Hobbes, stretched out on the floor, fast asleep. His paws twitched ever so slightly as he dreamed peacefully. Calvin couldn’t help but smile.
“Looks like I won this time,” he thought.
He slowly leaned closer, preparing to wake Hobbes with the greatest surprise ever.
Then, in the blink of an eye—
“I’M HOME!”
Before Calvin could even finish shouting, Hobbes exploded into action. The sleepy tiger transformed into a whirlwind of stripes, paws, and laughter, tackling Calvin with the perfectly timed pounce he had been famous for all along.
Calvin never stood a chance.
As the dust settled and Calvin sat dazed on the floor, he sighed to himself.
“Maybe… I should start listening to those quiet, nagging doubts.”
